mixx.com - a better digg (and less homophobic)

social bookmarking sites have been gaining in popularity in the past few years, with digg.com being the current market leader. however, the site has been accused of being frequented by (1) homophobic visitors who consistently flag or bury gay-themed content and (2) generally women-unfriendly visitors. (think: geeky college kids who have never been laid.)

blogher.com wrote an article a couple of months ago about lesbian digg.com users consistently getting banned from the site, despite posting quality articles. apparently feminists were getting banned from the site as well.

enter mixx.com, which has a sleeker interface and a much friendlier user base. the creators of mixx.com did something ingenious - allowing users to create public groups. this way, the geeky college kids who have never met a gay person or spoke to a woman before in their lives can go about their business in their circles, gays and lesbians can link to gay stuff without some homophobic idiot flagging the story as soon as it reaches the front page, and everyone can live in peace. one can, of course, still submit stories to the main content as well as their groups. however, even those submitted to the front page from someone in a different demographic is treated with respect (unless it is obvious spam, such as porn links) by others.

all in all, i recommend mixx.com.

I hear what you're saying. But this kind of reasoning sort of reminds me of my daughter's school where bullies are dealt with by the children they bully being warned to stay away from them. I think that the homophobes and misogynists should be taken to task and receive consequences for their actions and that digg, which I've never used, should be checking to see who is being flagged and why.

Oh, and HEY! I followed technorati back here. Thanks for the link. But if I had to choose a category, which is always a really slippery slope, I'd define my blog as a feminist blog. I don't know how you'd feel about moving me, but that's where I most comfortably would find "home" on your side bar. I mostly communicate with feminist bloggers, anyways. :)

I'll be back again. Cheers!

Thanks for the link, again. Maybe I'm feeling a little protective of my link to the f-word because it's IWD. :)

a blog isn't limited to one category on our blogroll. ;-) some of the blogs are listed in multiple categories.
