you have been all over daily kos recently posting diaries blaming religion for humanity's woes. way to go guys. thanks for providing evidence that liberals are anti-religion! i'm sure that we can sit back now and watch the votes roll in. keep posting long, uninformed screeds extolling the primacy of formal logic while pretending that your opinion is not equally faith-based. despite the importance you place on objective reality, you are completely blinded to it by your zealotry. the objective reality is that the vast majority of humanity has a belief in the divine.
human beings need more than the knowledge that formal logic and empiricism can provide. just because you are indiscriminate in your attacks on religion doesn't mean that you still aren't an ignorant bigot. besides, i am sure that vulcan poetry would totally suck.* i'll take humanity as it is -- a confounding mixture of the irrational and the rational blessed with the kind of brain that reaches for something beyond our concrete existence.
*i cannot take credit for this turn of phrase. it is emily0's response to my frustrated rantings about an atheist bigot's diary at kos today.

Dear deluded Christ Psychotic,
Please forgive me for not believing in your nonsense book about a man who does magic spells and which talks about talking donkeys and dragons.
It is sad that I don't buy this lovely story of how your god created the Universe in 6 days about 6000 years ago.
Is it called being "grown up"?
dear trolls:
clearly you haven't bothered to read the rest of this blog. we're all atheists (or at least agnostic). we think that religion is mostly harmless, and sometimes, it might even bring joy and peace to the believer. hey, if it works for someone, and i can live my merry life the way i want, who am i to judge?
however, we think that religious fanatics are like all fanatics - irrational nitwits. skim this blog and you'll see plenty of rants on "fundies."
so yes, this doesn't mean that all religious people are nitwits. only some of them.
religious fanatics are like any fanatics: they make everyone else's life miserable if you don't assimilate or at least get out of their way - this goes for militant people who subscribe to any sort of "ism" or even those crazy people who go berserk at soccer (or i guess they call it "football" in the uk) games, start brawls with fans of the opposing team, and cause riots. and yes, (some) atheists can be just as intolerant and obnoxious as your friendly homo-hating disbarred former attorney / kansas preacher who lives in a family compound.
see the distinction/similarities?
oh, and if emily1 is a "deluded christ psychotic" then i'm a two headed purple bat from pluto. she made a conscious decision not to be a believer in elementary school.
simon, after a cursory glance at the index page of this blog and after reading your mini-rant, it is evident that you didn't bother to read the rest of this page at all. take ten seconds and read the post two posts down, you know... the one about george bush pandering to "jesus freaks." in fact, read the post right below this one.
"deluded christ psychotic" my homo ass...
no, i don't believe in creationism, and i have serious doubts as to whether jesus existed at all. but running around calling ALL religious people "children" or "ignorant" or "stupid" or [insert adjective here] is a sure-fire way of turning regular run of the mill NON-fanatic church-going folks against us. WE end up looking like histrionic fanatics. get it? let's just agree to disagree with religious people in general, and let's try not to lump the non-fanatics who just want spiritual peace with the gay-hating, "let's ban all contraception," "you're ALL going to hell" right wing crackpots who use religion as a sword rather than a shield.
that was the gist of emily1's post.
Dear deluded Christ Psychotic ...
dear ignorant little troll:
i don't believe in god.
please keep shooting off your mouth. it's totally going to help liberals win elections.
oops. it appears our dear friend who has graced us with his presence doesn't live in the united states and would not care who wins elections here.
i think he just can't accept, on a philosophical level, that the majority of the world's population (or anyone for that matter) likes to exercise their imaginations and create otherworldly beings for their own emotional well being. it upsets him.
some people pray. others pop pills. still others read science books. others draw pictures.
and some people blog.
people are imperfect, yet they still manage to create things like world views, philosophies, political systems, corporations, great feats of engineering, the internet, and yes, religion. religion is just another brick in the wall of humanity, buddy. what's the problem? why the hate? if you are not being directly harmed (and no, "annoyance" doesn't count), why do you care what other people believe?
he ought to care who wins elections here. after all, the british government was one of the primary allies of the bush administration in getting the war in iraq started.
"he ought to care who wins elections here. after all, the british government was one of the primary allies of the bush administration in getting the war in iraq started."
ah, you are right. and yes, it appears that he does care, a little bit. "emperor bush." tee hee hee.
so yes, let's play nice mmmm kay?
Militant anything is a bad idea. It's one thing to value something that you firmly believe makes you a better person, and to express that individually, in groups, and to share that belief with those who are willing to listen, but it's a whole 'nother show, Oprah, to ram it down the throats of people who just aren't interested, by creating laws to regulate what they do with consenting, sane adults, or harassing them because they don't live life in the same way you do. If you have a faith tradition, a belief system, a way of living that does not harm the innocent and makes you happy, then I'm happy for you. I have a faith tradition that I rather like, and I'd be happy if my right to live as I please is respected.
*BTW, just to throw everyone's stereotypes into a tailspin, I'm a Muslim.
Haha - and then you judge me on one little comment. I love this emily 1 & 2 conversation though, it reminds me of Cora and Clarice from Gormenghast.
I do give a fuck if Christ psychos are running my country, or the country that thinks it has a right to "save" the world from terror.
I do give a fuck if in your country it's deemed "unpatriotic" not to believe you are on a mission to spread the word of some 2000 year old nutters.
If you read my post properly, you'll see it is addressed to "Christ Psychotic". If that isn't you, then you need not reply. Just llike I don't need to rewply to your open letter to (so called) militant atheists.
simon --
you stopped by my blog and called me names. i read your comment properly, and it was a misplaced hostile attack. you were trolling, and that's an objective _fact_. be an adult and own up to that.
'militant atheists' is a good description for non-believers who run around calling religious people stupid, deluded, psychotic, and childish while blaming religion for most, if not all, the problems in the world. i'd link the diaries at kos that inspired this post, but i don't feel like giving the people who wrote them more attention. you are welcome to go search for them yourself.
i even think that the term 'asshole' applies to people who act like that. they are not helping turn people aginst the bush administration. they're making it harder to convince moderate religious people to vote against republicans here in the US.
daily kos is the most popular progressive american site on the web. every now and then someone who voted for bush and now regrets it joins the community and its efforts to elect a more progressive government. for every one of those, there are more who are turned off by the hateful screeds of militant atheists who get off on bashing religion indiscriminately. i honestly don't feel like i can even defend liberals against accusations of elitism and hostility to religious faith anymore.
one can only hope that the "fundies" sufficiently scare the bajeezus out of moderate religious people. hopefully the militant far religious right will scream louder and more virulently than the militant anti-religion camp.
hopefully the militant far religious right will scream louder and more virulently than the militant anti-religion camp.
they already do scream louder. there are more of them than there are militant atheists.
