south dakota has outlawed virtually all abortions.
my final take on this, after thinking about it for a while. i've decided to temper my disappointment. if the women (and men who believe that the government should keep their hands off people's bodies) of south dakota don't vote these people out of office the next time elections roll around, then i'm afraid that's that. it really isn't up to the rest of us to tell them what they should believe. if they willingly let this happen, so be it. maybe the majority of them actually believe this is the right thing. if so, then okay. should we tell them how to vote? the united states is a huge country with lots of different people believing lots of different things. and south dakota is a much different place than new york, massachusetts or new jersey. our states have our own issues; perhaps we should turn our attention to our own jurisdictions and work hard to make sure policies that affect us are to our liking. and of course, VOTE.
(oh, but if the fundies come after new jersey and new york, you better believe we'll put up a fight. after we laugh hysterically.)

i don't think it's meant to be a "real" legal battle. like FAIR v. Rumsfeld, i think it is meant to provoke. no one really thought the supreme court would buy the argument in FAIR v. Rumsfeld. and the legal battle here is a major stretch. although these folks might be under the impression that they can defeat roe itself, with the new supreme court lineup and all.
but really, i think it's yet another dart thrown the cultural war. south dakota only has ONE planned parenthood. ONE. i mean, come on. you think this law has far reaching consequences? this law was meant to provoke and create a rallying cry for cultural conservatives. and that's that. now if this pisses people off in south dakota, they should just vote these dopes out of office. but like i said before, if they believe that this is the right thing, who are we to tell them how to live? i've never even been to south dakota.
i personally think it's just political grandstanding. the law isn't meant to stand. it's meant to be campaign material.
If South Dakota had the kind of traffic they do in New York, they'd kill the babies themselves.
