prior to learning about gender indentity and transgendered people, this would have made more sense than it does now. but sexual orientation is an entirely different animal than gender identity. if she is a lesbian, she feels like she is a female, because lesbians are females who like females. ya know?
i wonder if most people still think that lesbians want to be men. i've had to explain the difference between "LGB" and "T" on more than one occasion, and this surely doesn't help, especially when it's on cnn. i mean, my law professor had to actually draw a grid on the blackboard - one axis being orientation and one axis being gender - in our sexual orientation, gender and the law class, because some people in my class were confused.
i mean, props to the girl in the story - and for crying out loud - it's only a stupid homecoming title, but part of me is just like... *doh!*

If she went in drag - as a king - then it doesn't matter.
i think i figured out where the annoyance came from.
i wish they had said "woman goes as homecoming king" rather than "lesbian goes as homecoming king." and left her sexual orientation out of it.
the fact that she is a lesbian (i.e. her sexual orientation) is irrelevant. the fact that she is a woman (her gender) is relevant.
sorry, but implying that, because she is a lesbian, she is predisposed to wanting to be the homecoming king rather than the queen, is just irritating to me. it's very subtle, but i think the distinction may be lost to many people.
think about it. will your mothers or sisters or brothers in [name small town here] catch the distinction or the connotations?
Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait...wait. You don't want to be a man Emily2?
well, hmm... the peeing standing up thing seems fun.
