religious nuts, part 123124234

this man should be dishonorably stoned to death, and i don't mean fatally overdosing on opiates. this ignorant nutjob slit his stepdaughter's throat for allegedly committing adultery. but oh no, he didn't stop there. he then slit his three other daughter's throats (as a preemptive strike), so that they could not grow up and commit adultery. the three other daughters were aged 4, 7, and 8. his only regret was that he did not also murder the oldest stepdaughter's lover.

he absolutely and positively believes that what he did was right.

ugh. just ugh.

i'm angry that innocent people died as a result of his actions, whether he thought the actions were right or not. the outcome is the same: four dead people who did no wrong. but who is really to blame?

anyway, i'm going to go on a tangent... this is where the "ideas don't kill - people kill" line begins to get blurred.

really, the only way to stop this philosophy (which is responsible for horrific oppression of women - and might i add - homosexuals, non-muslim fundamentalists, oh, and pretty much everyone) is to kill or imprison forever the people who are teaching this philosophy (as no amount of reasoning will work). and that just opens up a whole can of worms. unfortunately, it is true and very hard to deal with, as it is diametrically opposed to the free exchange of ideas, one of the founding principles of this country and modern society.

anyway, i really don't see a difference between islamic fundamentalists, people like eric rudolph, mao tse-tung in the cultural revolution and the nazis. extremist ideas are very dangerous when they become popular (or are forced on a large number of people as the absolute truth). eric rudolph is seen as a right wing terrorist nutjob in the united states, but what if his extremist ideas gained popularity? we have a few extremist nutjobs that are in charge of the spiritual development of A LOT OF PEOPLE in the middle east (and around the world). and that's just frightening.

this is the point where liberalism just examine itself - should these ideas take hold and spread, liberalism itself will be an endangered philosophy.

anyway, i don't know the answer here. sorry. i think i'm going to punt and think about this later. it hurts my head at the moment.
