once these thugs' identities are found they'll never set foot in chapel hill, nc again. they picked the wrong city in which to gay bash. this is the town where i grew up - we had a gay-straight alliance in my high school. and this was in the early 90's in the south. this is the city where matthew shepard resided in peace before moving to the pacific northwest. the mayor of carrboro (the town over - and if you think chapel hill is liberal, carrboro is twice as liberal) is gay, and his boyfriend is on the town council of chapel hill. these blokes better start packin', because when their mugs are flashed across the front page of the chapel hill news and the daily tar hell, there won't be a place they can hide. heh, maybe a duke frat house, but no duke frat will allow a unc student into its front doors unless the student is a "she" and drunk.

there were over a dozen witnesses to the attack and only one person came forward.
the attackers *can* hide. there are obviously plenty of people living in their community who may not _approve_ of gay-bashing, but they don't exactly disapprove either.
over a dozen people stood around doing nothing while six men beat the victim and broke his nose. that's fucking sickening.
i'm going to say that the impetus for not coming forward is not indifference to gay bashing -- it's probably an unwillingness to get involved with the criminal justice system, to be called as a witness during trial, etc. i know plenty of people who disapprove of a lot of things but don't want to get involved in other people's business when it comes to dealing with police, lawyers, judges... anyway, another possible reason is that the witnesses were not townies. franklin street is right next to the frat houses, and many other students also live around there. native chapel hillians are very liberal, helpful, enlightened and open-minded - they're mostly families of professors, researchers, graduate students, and doctors. some of the unc undergraduate students... maybe not. unc is required to take the top 10% of all 100 counties in n.c., from the very very blue to the very very red. and some of the counties *i* wouldn't be stuck walking through.
street justice is a lot easier than court justice in my opinion. not saying it's right, but i'm jaded and just stating an observation.
... or the whole group psychology thing... people will all stand by waiting for someone to do something first before they act. many a person has perished by falling on nyc subway tracks because of this phenomenon.
who knows. human nature can be icky.
my only comments are as follows:
1. i object strongly to matthew shepard's place of murder being described as "the pacific northwest". Wyoming is strictly in the MidWaste. You don't even get to pretend to be in the PNW until you hit the Oregon state line, and even then you're pushing it.
2. to all the bashers of the world, i utter the laconic persian curse: Kun-e mollÄh chape beshi! May you be shoved into the mullah's ass!
