wow!

when i went to high school, we only had one high school in our school district. it was a run of the mill suburban high school. the year after i graduated, the school system opened up a shiny new high school a few blocks from my house, which i "ooh"ed and "aah"ed at.

now, a third one is opening in that school district, and check out its fancy pants eco-friendly setup. no really... READ IT. this is a PUBLIC SCHOOL.

i'm embarrassed to admit it, but i'm so jealous! i remember when chapel hill high school got its mac computer lab with laser printers, and i thought it was the end all be all. but carrboro high school is getting this:

The $34 million school is the first high school in the southeast with a LEED certification, which stands for "first leadership in energy and environmental design".

Simply put, it's a green building that saves energy.

Only contractors recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council worked on the school. The supplies are regional to cut down on gas emissions while hauling supplies.

"We have rainwater collection," said Assistant Superintendent Steve Scroggs, "We have photovoltaics generating electricity on the roof, we have solar hot water on the roof."

bling bling!
