re: this blog post about asian american kids and career pressure from their parents.
let's just make it simple, okay? families who have been in this country for generations may have a little safety net known as "inheriting granddad's house" or "grandma got run over by a reindeer and i got $30,000." recent transplants don't have that luxury. it's make it or break it. one slip up and it's NO SOUP FOR YOU! no social safety net; it's every man and woman for himself/herself. they just don't have the money to support kids that fuck up (without sacrificing their retirement), so financial stability is in the forefront of their minds.
my parents had to work extra hard; there was no room for error. i was able to fart around a bit, but i still had to bust ass eventually. my kids will be the ones who can fart around, get uneven haircuts and live in an overpriced loft in an industrial wasteland populated by "artists" (i.e. unemployed liberal arts majors living on their parents' money). and their kids will rebel against them by being republicans.
