Tiny Homes

since emily2 addressed the subject of McMansions, i thought it would be appropriate to post about the Tiny Homes company. they specialize in building homes that are 300-1000 square feet. i would be more than happy with a tiny home. i've never been a person who needed an enormous amount of space. these houses look damned cute _and_ cozy.

that's perfect for a place by a lake. 1000 sq feet? that's ginormous by manhattan standards. hahahaha!

anyway, i guess that whole mcmansion-hate pissed me off because they're just, well... not so out of place in a place like nebraska. there is a lot of land out there, so of course the houses are bigger, the cars are bigger, and even the people are bigger.

so yeah. full disclosure: my parents bought one of those ginormous houses, and it's kind of nice being able to escape from other family members in your own home. you could even chill out in the bathroom if you wanted. their bathroom is bigger than my bedroom - tricked out with skylights, a jacuzzi and a pretty sweet view. yes, i know it sounds decadent to someone like me who is used to living in small apartments in a crowded east coast city, but (1) they worked 80 hour weeks their entire lives like crazy people and shouldn't feel guilty about getting something a little over the top and (2) it's the midwest - crowding isn't really a problem - and out in hee haw land, it really isn't so decadent. it's normal.

if they would stop working like crazy people and finish the basement, install a bar, find the ping pong table, stick furniture in somewhere, put in hardwood floors, and stop using it as a storage area for 40 years of amassed crap, it might even be fabulous. i think i need to call queer eye.

so yeah, basically, people on the coasts who have this pre-programmed "big is bad" chip need to stop hating on people in kansas where the overall land and resources situation is different imho.

if i had the money my parents paid for their house out in nebraska i could probably buy a small fixer upper in a neighborhood full of crack dens or a one bedroom apartment. do you know that an average apartment condo in the dumbo area of BROOKLYN (not even manhattan) is over a million? that's SO WACK. things just aren't the same out in tractor land.

i think the average $2000/month apartment in cambridge is approximately 800 sq ft. i wonder what a small plot of land would cost here. i wonder if i could pay 50k to the Tiny House company and get as much square footage as i would for a $400,000 condo. i tell ya, that website set the gears in my head a turnin'.
