people are still talking about alt.fan.karl-malden.nose. and not even the newsgroup itself but a flamewar that began on the site.

now i think the administrator was a pretty cool guy in person, but OH MY GOD, THAT NEWSGROUP WAS SO FUCKING ANNOYING. i saw a few posts way back in 1997, and i promptly left and never visited again.

the term "groupthink" doesn't even describe it. it was a fine example of "group-loss-of-several-hundred-IQ-points." normally intelligent, articulate people, when they entered into this virtual crack den, would post a combination of rambling stream of consciousness rants that led nowhere, disjointed purposeful malapropisms that they couldn't stop giggling over, and hyena noises run through a blender. totally couldn't deal.

and people look back at this crap fondly?! sorry, i but don't get it.

(and for crying out loud, i was never a noser. i don't get why people even associate me with that group. probably because i had a net presence and a hefty web site. okay, listen: same medium. different message? okay? NOT A NOSER. NOT. NOT. NOT.)
