(anyway, i doubt there are any hidden sociological underpinnings to this phenomenon. i think the article said it correctly that small children see dolls as ticky tacky inanimate objects rather than treasured toys with a human quality, so taking them apart isn't all that disturbing. while we as adults see this activity as a little macabre and twisted, children see it as simply [in their words] "disposing of an excessive commodity in the same way one might crush cans for recycling.")

i gave all my trolls mohawks before cutting off all of their hair (in a fashion not unlike the UDC, now that i think about it).
i recall trying to decapitate one, but the whole one-solid-piece-of-plastic design concept prevent that from happening. sigh.
