Signal To Noise Status: Excellent

Chungking Express features a character who listens to California Dreaming incessantly. she also breaks into a cop's apartment and cleans it repeatedly because she has a crush on him. but, i digress. the point of this post was to write about california.

california overwhelms. california defies definition. it's one of _those_ cultural signifiers. it's evocative outside its boundaries. i wish i could have seen more of it. i wish i could have seen more of san francisco alone. a fair number of people love to bash popular culture to relieve anxiety from their own personal ideological neuroses. (this=Universe.everyone). the ability to shape popular culture is a sign of power. that's why all communities want to remake it after their own favorite blueprint.

i'm feeling really positive about california this week [link via kevin drum]. so is commenter Patrick Meighan at political animal:

[...] My state (the third-largest state in the union, the 6th largest economy in the world, the most ethnically-diverse state in the union, the state that contributes more in federal tax dollars than any other state, the state that has lost more soldiers in Iraq than any other state, the state that in 2004 produced 3 times as many Olympic medalists as any other state) told George W. Bush to go get f'd. [...]
i need to buy one of those 'I (Heart) California' shirts ASAP.
