strong family values are the building block of society, say the bushies. i guess they're right - if you're a machismo-filled bigot.
Palestinian Kills Sisterman, i thought americans were some backwards-ass motherfuckers, but i have come to realise recently that there are much stupider and more ignorant males than those of the united states.
The Peninsular (Qatar), 19 March 2005Jerusalem - A 17-year-old Palestinian girl who became pregnant after her father raped her was strangled to death by her brother in a so-called honour killing in the northern West Bank, a Palestinian newspaper reported yesterday.
Al Ayyam daily said the teenager was strangled by her 27-year-old brother on Wednesday in Bala’a town near the northern city of Tulkarem. Arrested by Palestinian security forces, the brother admitted he had killed her to “erase the shame” after her pregnancy began showing.
He also admitted knowing that his sister had become pregnant because their father raped her. Police are now hunting the 52-year-old father, who witnessed the murder, and has since disappeared.
A Palestinian women’s group said the girl had reported the rape to the police after learning she was pregnant.
“The police did not arrest or even question the father,” the group charged in an open letter published in another paper. Signed by the Palestinian Working Women’s Society for Development, the letter called on the Palestinian parliament to adopt laws to protect women from all forms of violence.
probably the most offensive part of these situations of re-rapes and murders of women who suffer rape and sexual abuse is that they are classified as reclaiming honour.
now, if my dad raped my sixteen-year-old sister and i found out when i learnt she was pregnant, guess who i would kill?
um, hello? my father, for raping my sister. what kind of retarded, fucked-up society believes the proper response is for me to kill my sister for being raped by my father when she was sixteen? (or thirty, for that matter.)

I hate hearing these type of things. :(
And even sadder, the women expect this to happen and can't find a way out of this situation.
and this is where the liberal dilemma arises:
1) all societies have problems, even ours, which has a whole host of fucked up issues, even some strains of extremism
2) but some societies have even worse problems and really should have some of their neanderthal, even more extremist, practices stamped out
3) some of the societies that fall into category 2 are being treated badly by societies that fall into category 1, and many lefties are bothered by this, more so than things like utter subjugation of women and persecution of homosexuals that category 2 societies practice
which one do you pick?
it's a rhetorical question and a bit simplistic, but something to think about.
i pick the option that gives the most freedom all around. i'm not a moral relativist. i don't care what any holy book says. if it or its followers relegate women to second class status, then it's not a form of culture that i think is worth preserving.
from what em0 tells me, palestinian culture was quite a bit more modern at one time. it became more reactionary as the tension between israelis and the stateless arabs among them got worse. in fact, i think the israelis have become more reactionary. but em0 is worlds more qualified to comment on this than i.
