so, i got a call from army recruiters. i think it must be my fantastic 20/20 vision, my big strapping frame, and my reknowned respect for authority that caught their attention. then again, maybe i'm just another warm body that's good for stopping a bullet and filling a coffin.
actually, they probably called because they got my name and telephone number from umass. i'm a candidate for a computer science degree. the military needs people with technical skills. great. i wonder when they'll decide to start drafting people. i don't suppose it really matters. if i were drafted, i'd just refuse to go.

i think you have a right to "opt out" according to FERPA. then again, i keep seeing conflicting information as to whether the "denying access" part of the solomon amendment or FERPA trumps. call umass and tell them not to give out your name and number to military recruiters and see what happens.
i can handle talking to recruiters. i guess i'm just spooked about it. my classmates got calls within the last couple of months too.
i wouldn't mind working for the military in a capacity that doesn't involve killing anyone or directly supporting people who are involved in killing others. which rules out going to iraq. i'd be willing to work for the department of homeland security, however.
just remember: there are certain things that prevent you from serving in the military. until they run out of human ammo, anyway, and suddenly everyone is fair game.
SLDN has the up-and-up on it.
also, if you feel a need to work for government, i'd much rather work for the Feds or for the Company. especially the latter if you are tech services or an analyst - the pay grade is fabulous in comparison.
i'm reposting the cites to the solomon amendment because i was having a hard time getting them to work unformatted: 10 U.S.C. section 983 and 32 C.F.R. section 216.
thanks for the cite, shysterb
