atrios posted a scan of a hideous political mailing from arkansas.
i have no doubt that there are christian fanatics in positions of influence within the bush administration. the list of fanatics in the ranks of the republican party is endless. however, the neocons calling the shots are generally not theocrats. they cynically manipulate fanaticism as a means to their ends.
neocons love power above all. they also know that the heart of a would be theocrat lusts after power too. religious and nationalist passions are potent forces of human nature. they're also an explosive combination.
one wonders if the neocons and the fanatics will ever turn on each other. that would be ugly. these fucks don't know what kind of fire they're stoking or how rapidly it could rage out of control.
after all, they were completely idiotic in their predictions for iraq:
shining democracy?
um... nope. they were smoking crack then, and they are smoking crack now.
busy little capitalist factories?
hell naw. the funeral business is booming. so is the business of terrorism. overall, the business of slaughtering people is doing very well in iraq. very well indeed.
the business of poisoning iraq is also just peachy.
- depleted uranium
- dysentery
- hepatitis
- typhoid
yes, a failing sewage system is deadly indeed. i don't think it will be long before lack of sanitation is responsible for more deaths than war and terrorist bombings. of course, the war is still responsible for all of these deaths. the war made it impossible to maintain and repair the civil infrastructure.
easy terms on contracts for all that sweet crude oil
the occupation can't deal with what goes down the toilet and what comes out the tap. they sure as hell can't repair and maintain the equipment and machinery to pump oil for export. private companies are having some predictable recruitment problems for their iraq ventures. civil engineers have not fared well in the middle east since the invasion of iraq.
with the war on terrorism being the miserable tragedy that it is, these assholes can't rely on their tough-on-terra 'tude to sweep them to victory. the brazen attempt to hitch a ride to the polls on the 9/11 hearse with the RNC convention having failed, they are floundering around for some means to secure their hold on power.
desperation is such a dangerous state of mind. how very predictable that the neocons are making scapegoats of liberalism and its corollaries -- respect for women's property rights over their own bodies and respect for the civil rights of gays. support for abortion rights and gay marriage is apparently tantamount to banning the bible.
i'm just sitting here feverishly willing them to fail at their attempt to further inflame the religious right's ambitions to subordinate women to their 'proper biblical role.' please, please let them fail at their attempts to tempt the twisted fantasies of homophobia.
they can't run on their record of fighting the enemy abroad. so, they have invented enemies within. how surprising that the enemies within are their political opponents! many hearts in america yearn for a good, bloody, righteous crusade for jesus, and the neocons are unbelievably successful at framing liberalism in direct opposition to christianty.
