krugman's latest is a gem. at some point, i am going to write a review of his book. in any case, i have noticed a certain affinity between the content of krugman's recent editorials and that of popular liberal bloggers like calpundit and atrios. i am a great fan of blogging because it provides a medium for private citizens to 'talk back' to the maintstream media.
although i despise laziness in reporting like any political blog junkie, i don't share the sheer hatred and distrust i sense in some of the denizens of the blogosphere. although, blogs are becoming increasingly popular, they don't reach the audience of the mainstream media. we need friends in that hallowed circle to publicize the issues we think are being ignored in traditional media.
we have found one such friend. it makes sense after all, since krugman himself is an outsider in the media circus in some ways. the relationship krugman has with the blogosphere has taken some interesting turns over the last year. krugman and atrios were mutual victims of donald luskin's special brand of obsessive insanity. calpundit published an interview with krugman at his blog. someone named "Bobby" maintains an archive of krugman's work that is wildly popular judging from the 200,000+ visits the site has received so far. it is in invaluable reference for bloggers who both love and hate krugman since the new york times doesn't make it easy to maintain permanent links to their articles.
the end result is that krugman's recent columns touch on matters that are intensely reported and debated in the blogosphere but barely noticed in the media -- such as multiple instances of questionable accounting regarding the iraq reconstruction projects and the dangers of electronic voting. i have noticed some small signs that the mainstream is beginning to take notice. this is probably because we are in an election year when the scent of politcal scandal is all the sweeter to the media hounds.
we're witnessing a media revolution. hold tight. it's going to be a fun ride.
