back in the dark days prior to roe v. wade, there was Jane, an organization of women who provided abortion services to other women in chicago.
given the steady erosion of abortion rights since that decision, i think everyone who really cares about women's rights should take a page from their book. it's not certain that bush won't win re-election. the pro-life movement has gotten bolder since 2000, and it's not certain that they won't try to force a supreme court decision under a second bush term.
the liberal contingent of the court is aging fast. if george bush wins this november, you can bet he'll have a good chance at packing the court with reactionaries who won't uphold the right to abortion. if that happens, i will personally make it my duty to help women obtain safe abortions, whether it means driving them to canada or working with an organization like jane.
abortion was common, between 200,000 and 1.2 million a year, prior to roe v. wade. outlawing it won't stop it any more than anti-drug laws stopped drug use. the only difference the law would make is that we'd start seeing women killed or maimed by botched illegal abortions.
pro-life, my ass.
